Cirencester
Cirencester dates back to the first century AD, and was the second largest capital of Roman Britain after London. The town lies at the centre of a number of Roman roads including the Fosse Way and the town’s large Market Square still features lively markets each week.
The town is located at a crossroads of main roads from Tetbury, Gloucester and Swindon, leading to its being named the ‘Capital of the Cotswolds.’
The Corinium Museum contains a range of Roman artefacts and a reconstruction of the Roman town of Corinium. There are also interesting mosaics and treasures recovered from a burial site.
The town has a parish Church with an tall, imposing tower that has impressive views over Cirencester Park and the surrounding countryside.
Events: Cirencester Fair, held annually in October (usually first 2 Mondays)
