Gloucester

Gloucester lies at the heart of the Cotswolds, with many beautiful towns and villages located in the surrounding countryside. The city is the capital of Gloucestershire and of major importance historically. William the Conqueror ordered the Domesday Book to be written from here.

The city became a major shipping port during the sixteenth century, and in Victorian times the docklands were built up and canal construction began from here. The National Waterways Museum recalls the history and is a popular attraction.

Gloucester also has a fantastic Norman Cathedral containing the tombs of Edward II and William the Conqueror’s eldest son.
