The Heights of Abraham

The Heights of Abraham first opening its gates to visitors in 1780. In those days visitors reached Masson Hill on foot, scaling the steep slopes. Nowadays a cable car system is used which was introduced in 1984, the first of its kind in the British Isles. With heights at almost a thousand feet there are stunning views of the Derwent Valley and beyond to Matlock and the Peak District. The Heights of Abraham also offers an insight into the history of the area by giving guests the opportunity to visit and mine and hear stories from the original miners.

The house and grounds is decorated with many famous works of art, sculptures and the spectacular emperor fountain in the garden. The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site
Amid breath-taking countryside in the heart of rural Derbyshire lies The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, originally inscribed by UNESCO in 2001.
The 15 mile site follows the River Derwent from Matlock Bath to Derby. It contains a fascinating series of historic mill complexes including some of the world's first "modern" factories, along with the watercourses that powered them, the settlements built for the mill workers, and the remains of one of the world's earliest railways all situated within a stunning landscape which has changed little over two centuries.
Visitors to The Derwent Valley can enjoy a range of country walks, shopping, art galleries, museums food and drink and abundant local hospitality.
