Snowshill Manor
| History Snowshill Manor is eccentrically ‘English’. It was the home of Charles Paget Wade, an exponent of the Art and Crafts Movement who housed his great collection in the Manor itself, and lived in a cottage at the bottom of the garden. Bought by Wade in 1919, it was the first National Trust garden to be managed following organic principles. The Gardens Wade followed the philosophy that the garden should be ‘an extension of the house’ and consequently the garden is petitioned into a number of ‘small rooms’ with each one having a slightly different theme. Strange happenings Before the English Reformation, Snowshill Manor was a monastery and a number of reports of a ghost have been collated. It has also been said that a ghost sighting by Wade in the Manor contributed to him living in the garden cottage. |
