Great Chalfield Manor

Although the estate was recorded in the Doomsday Book, Great Chalfield Manor as it stands today was rebuilt between 1465-85 on the site of an earlier fortified house. During the English Civil War it withstood a short siege and underwent restoration between 1905-12. In 1947 the Manor was acquired by the National Trust.

The Manor

The Manor itself consists of a number of rooms built around a central courtyard. Perhaps the most impressive is the medieval Great Hall. The entire estate is built in Corsham stone, providing a yellow-grey unity to the Manor.

The Grounds

The field names and boundaries of the modern day estate are the same as those on a map of 1794 and the land is still worked in the same way as it has been for 900 years.
