Belas Knap
| Belas Knap is a Neolithic burial mound in Gloucestershire. Literally meaning ‘long barrow’, the mound is 55m in length although it would have originally been much longer. It was built in around 3000BCE and was first explored between 1863-65. However due to the techniques used in the initial excavation, the Ministry of Works began a restoration project in the late 1920s. Belas Knap site The site consists of four burial chambers formed by upright slabs linked by dry stone walls and the remains of 38 human skeletons as well as animal bone and pottery have been found. There is a false entrance at the larger northern end and artefacts from the excavations are currently housed at the church museum in nearby Winchcombe. |
