Gloucester Cathedral
| Gloucester Cathedral History The Cathedral originated with the foundation of an abbey built in 681, dedicated to St Peter. During Henry VIII’s reign, the abbey survived the dissolution of the monasteries which led to the destruction of many of England’s finest ecclesiastical buildings. John Wakeman who was the last abbot of Tewksbury, became the first bishop of Gloucester Cathedral. Architecture The Cathedral is essentially Norman at its core but there is also evidence of a lot of Gothic architecture. The central tower, built in the fifteenth century, reaches a height of 225ft. King Edward II and the Three Choirs Festival Gloucester Cathedral is home to an impressive shrine of King Edward II who was murdered at nearby Berkeley Castle in 1327. The Three Choirs Festival sis held at Gloucester Cathedral in rotation with venues at Hereford and Worcester. Harry Potter and Gloucester Cathedral Gloucester Cathedral was a filming location for the first two Harry Potter films despite some debate about whether the content of the books was compatible with the Cathedral. |
