Goldsborough Hall, situated near Knaresborough, is a perfect base to explore the chic shopping areas of nearby Harrogate, historic York and the city of Leeds.

Benningbrough Hall

This imposing Georgian mansion near York contains one of the most fascinating Baroque interiors in the country. Lovely parkland and gardens.

Bolton Abbey

The historic Bolton Abbey Estate is the Yorkshire home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and draws visitors to its breath-taking landscape and excellent facilities.

Castle Howard

Situated near York, Castle Howard was the location for Brideshead and has beautiful gardens, farm shop, a new play area and an arboretum.

Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal

Yorkshire's finest Cistercian Abbey ruin, with over 10 historic buildings, spanning over 800 years of history, as well as an elegant Georgian water garden and medieval deer park.

Harewood House

Harewood House, near Leeds, is a must especially with its close connection to Goldsborough Hall. It is the family seat of the Earl and Countess of Harewood. It is renowned for its stunning architecture and exquisite Adam interiors and rich collection of Chippendale furniture as well as over 100 acres of award-winning gardens.

Knaresborough Castle

This medieval castle dates back to the early 12th century and has ties with Goldsborough Hall. When Cromwell's Army were destroying Knaresborough Castle after the English Civil War, the soldiers were stationed at Goldsborough Hall.

Newby Hall

The hall has one of Britain's finest Adam interiors with Chippendale furniture, Gobelin tapestries and a contemporary sculpture park. More than 25 acres to explore along with some very large herbaceous borders. 

Ripley Castle

Situated near Harrogate, Ripley Castle is an historic attraction open to the public all year round. A beautiful location with memorable surroundings, the castle also plays host to numerous events throughout the year.

Skipton Castle

The Castle was guardian of the gateway to the Yorkshire Dales for over 900 years. A unique fortress it is one of the most complete and well-preserved medieval castles in England.

York Minster

World of James Herriot

This museum in Thirsk explores the home and surgery of James Herriot. The centre houses a unique tribute to the vet come author Alf Wight.

 

GARDENS

The Walled Garden at Scampston

A stunning contemporary garden in Malton was created by internationally acclaimed designer, Piet Oudolf, and is set within the walls of the kitchen garden of Scampston Hall. Striking perennial meadow planting works well with more traditional parts of the garden and is complemented by excellent catering and plant sales areas.

RHS Harlow Carr

These gorgeous gardens are just outside Harrogate. Wander through tranquil surroundings and find inspiration from the innovative and dramatic planting. Stroll along the stream side garden and woodland, explore the gardens through time; linger in the scented garden and take practical ideas from the kitchen garden. Visit the extensive shop and plant centre; get advice for your garden.

Thorp Perrow Arboretum, Bedale

There is more than 100 acres of woodland to explore with trees from around the world with 5 National Collections and 66 Champion Trees. Spring brings beautiful displays of daffodils, cherry blossom, lilac and bluebells - followed by wildflowers. Visit later in the year for the spectacular autumn colours. Open all year

 

Harrogate

Harrogate offers an elegant mix of boutiques and galleries, set within stunning architecture and handsome tree-lined avenues. The town centre is home to more than 20 antiques dealers and many exclusive shops, pavement cafés and award-winning restaurants, many based around the Montpellier Quarter.

Montpellier's specialist dealers trade in a variety of antiques, including furniture, porcelain, clocks and paintings. Look out for the Harrogate's antiques fairs in the springtime too - the perfect place to pick up a unique bargain. Alternatively, if it's independent shops you're after then London fashion designer Caroline Charles, Farrah's famous toffee and food emporium and hair and beauty specialists can all be found in the Montpellier quarter.

York

Wander the web of shopping streets to browse the amazing array of independent boutiques, vintage stores and popular high street names. Try Stonegate, which is an attractive old street full of interesting little shops, or The Shambles, which is Europe's best preserved medieval street, and the UK's most visited - now a wealth of shopping and restaurants.

Also, try the Coppergate Centre which is York's main shopping centre within the ancient city walls. Coppergate is home to the famous Jorvik Viking Centre and many big-name high street shops, café's, galleries and museums. Coppergate has an on-site multi-storey car park and the central bus stops and railway station are only a short walk away. Coppergate's outdoor area is used to host music performances, theatre productions and some of York's most popular annual events such as the St Nicholas Fayre Christmas market.

Leeds

Leeds is the North of England's premier shopping destination, with everything from haute couture to vintage delights. The Victoria Quarter, housed in an elegant Grade II listed building, is home to many of the world's leading fashion brands including Louis Vuitton, Vivienne Westwood, and Harvey Nichols department store. Gourmets will love the Corn Exchange with its domed food hall and delicatessens, or travel slightly further afield to the White Rose Centre where two floors of high street delights are enough to satisfy even the most enthusiastic shopper.
