Below we list some of the best routes nearby to guide you on your way.
WATER OF LEITH
One of the most tranquil running routes in Edinburgh starts on the doorstep. Head up Wester Coates Road, turning right at Wester Coates Garden and follow the path up to the Water of Leith. The Water of Leith Walkway travels all the way from Balerno to the docks in Leith, for a total of 12 miles (19.5km). This riverside run is perfect for those who love nature and wildlife – look out for otters, kingfishers and herons as you enjoy a moment of serenity in the otherwise busy city. From The Dunstane, you can choose to run either east or west along the river. Both routes come highly recommended, with many charming sights along the way.
Water of Leith East – 7km
Turn right and start running east along the Water of Leith Walkway. The path crosses bridges and roads so keep an eye out for the Walkway signposts to keep you on track. The route from the hotel to the end of the river in Leith is about 7km long. You can always return back along the walkway for a longer run, or take the number 12 bus from Leith back to The Dunstane. Some of the most interesting sights along the way include the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Dean Village, St Bernard's Well and The Botanical Gardens.
Water of Leith West – 12.5km
Turn left and run west along the Walkway. Again, follow the signposts to to stay on track. This route takes in the sights of Murrayfield Stadium, Saughton Park, The Water of Leith Visitor Centre and Colinton Village. Take the number 44 bus back to Haymarket Station to return home.

Follow this route to see some of the main Edinburgh sights in an 8km loop. Head up Princes Street, the city's main shopping street with incredible views of the castle and old town, towards Calton Hill. Power up the hill before taking a well-deserved breather at the top, from which you can enjoy panoramic views and see the Athenian acropolis. Make your way back along High Street, or the Royal Mile. Along the way you'll see some of Ediburgh's most famous monuments, including St Gile's Cathedral, Parliament Square and statues of important historical figures. Climb Granny's Green Steps up to Edinburgh Castle and continue the loop back to the hotel. This route makes for a great morning run, before the streets get too busy, allowing you to get in you exercise and sightseeing before settling down to breakfast.
If you wish to see more of the city and surrounding area, there are many runs a little further afield. Portobello Beach, to the east of the city, is a beautiful place for a seaside run. The beach promenade is about 2 miles long, making for a nice out and back route. To get there, take the 26 bus. For those wanting a trail run, the Pentland Hills to the south have 100km of paths to explore. Take the 101 bus from the city centre to reach the Hills.
