History of the hotel
Originally built in 1725, the central stone building formed part of a working farmstead, accompanied by a series of outbuildings, including a washhouse, stables, cowhouse, and cart shed. Historical records show that by the mid 1800s, the property was home to multiple families, reflecting the traditional Yorkshire way of life.
The name “Wainstones" pays homage to the nearby dramatic rock formations on the North York Moors, famed for their natural beauty and ancient folklore. The property evolved over time from a rural dwelling into a more extensive residence, with maps and aerial photographs from the 20th century showing how various wings were gradually added and connected.
In 1923, the house was auctioned and purchased by Harry Moore, a well known local butcher and community figure. Over the decades, major renovations in the 1970s fully integrated the original buildings, transforming the site into the welcoming and characterful hotel you see today.
Great Broughton itself is a charming village with roots in agriculture, nestled at the foot of the Cleveland Hills and a gateway to the North York Moors National Park. Whether you're here to explore the rolling countryside, hike the Cleveland Way, or simply soak up the area's tranquility, The Wainstones offers the perfect blend of history, hospitality, and heritage.
