Lacock Abbey
| History Lacock Abbey was founded in 1232 by Ela, Countess of Salisbury. During its 750 year history, the Abbey has altered a great deal. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII the original church was destroyed. In 1827, William Henry Fox Talbot, famous for developing the positive/negative process of photography, added three new windows. The surrounding woodland gardens are designed in a nineteenth century style and between 1944-1946, the Abbey was donated to the National Trust. It has been maintained ever since. There is a museum dedicated to William Henry Fox Talbot in the village. In recent years Lacock Abbey was the location for the Harry Potter films as well as period dramas such as Pride and Prejudice, Moll Flanders and Emma. |
