Can you park at The Hope Anchor Hotel?

As the Hope Anchor is an old building located in the middle of a historic town, there is no on-site parking available. However, there are a number of nearby pay-and-display car parks, as well as local on-street public parking spaces along the High Street.

The closest car park to the Hope Anchor is The Strand car park (TN31 7DB), which is approximately a 3-minute walk away, including a moderate uphill walk back to the property. This is a convenient place for guests to park upon arrival. Guests who wish to move to a less expensive car park afterward may use the Station car park, which is only a few minutes further on foot.

Can children stay at The Hope Anchor Hotel?

Children are welcome

History of the hotel

The Hotel's name apparently derives from the fact that an anchor was once seen as a sign of hope and was used as an alternative to a crucifix as a guide for early Christians to find their secret meeting places.

It is also thought to have once been the hide-out of the notorious Tenterden gang, who used its old secret passages for smuggling.

More recently, The Hope Anchor is a key location in Malcolm Saville's mystery novel, The Gay Dolphin Adventure, a 1945 ripping yarn, which also features secret rooms and hidden treasure, in keeping with Rye's famous history.

Happily, these days you do not need to be an Owler, as the smugglers were known locally, or solve a local mystery, to enjoy a stay and a warm welcome at Hope Anchor.
